Founded in July 1966, Otshakati as passionately  called by the native Aakwambi speaking people is gateway for the Westerners (Aangandjera, Aambalantu, Aakwaluudhi, Aakolonghadhi, Aambandja,  Aakaoko and some Aakwanyama). The name literally means "that which is in between". The westerners would (still) meet/come in/to Oshakati before travelling to other Northern towns such as Ongwediva, Ondangwa and Southern Namibia.

The city was used a base base of operations by the South African Defence Force during the Apartheid regime. There are very few historic sites such as the 1988 bomb blast monument, state house buildings and Kuthilandjeko aircraft (one of the first entrepreneurs). For sightseers, you can visit the Broadcast Tower (275 m), NamWater works, new state of the art Open Market (Named after Dr.  Frans Aupa Indongo), Okatana Mission Parish, MeatCo abbatoirs, Coca Cola and Namibia Brewery.

Situated in the Cuvelai-Etosha Basin and cut by Okatana river, makes Oshakati the market for fresh catfish and white tilapia during rainy seasons. The best time to visit Oshakati is between February and May because of the villagers around that flock to the town to sell their first harvests.

Hotels and resorts are found on south of Okatana river, the area that was the residential for whitess and coloreds. Oshadila lodge, Oshakati Country Club and many bnbs.

I hope you enjoy the "Capital City of Northern Namibia". Our next stop will be at Ruacana.
