Give back, to move forward

Think of giving as rowing a boat. If you want to move forward you must row backwards so that the current produced pushes you forward. This is exactly the same thing with giving, it pushes you forward.  The golden rule is: THE MORE YOU GIVE THE FURTHER YOU MOVE FORWARD.
