Today's quote comes from the man that declared the journey to the moon in 1960s, John F. Kennedy a.k.a. JFK was the 35th US President from from January 1961 until his assassination in November 1963. He is famously known for this quote:
"DO NOT ASK WHAT YOUR COUNTRY CAN DO FOR YOU, INSTEAD ASK WHAT YOU CAN DO FOR YOUR COUNTRY"
He knew that sending men and women to the moon was a crisis in the making but instead he decided to look further the crisis and see OPPORTUNITIES. The ideas of sending people to the moon led to creation of INTERNET.
To this question asked by Al Jazeera: Was the space programme worth the money?
Answer:
Roger Launius: Absolutely. It brought a whole series of technologies and scientific understanding to the human race. In terms of scientific understanding we have learned a great deal by flying in space for the last 50 plus years - and I'm not just speaking about Apollo [the moon landing in 1969]. This includes robotic probes, satellites and the Hubble space telescope which have changed our perspective of the universe.
Next time we find ourselves in crisis, we should remember that there are plenty of opportunities around the crisis that need to be explored.
